They Do Not Start With White Gloves

On 4 July, descendants of the original signers of the Declaration of Independence tap the Liberty Bell 13 times, each tap representing one of the 13 original states.

The descendants, nine and ten generations removed from the revolutionary signers, wear white gloves to protect the bell from the finger-taps.

And while the ceremony is filled with white gloves and ceremonial gowns, revolutions do not start out that way.

They begin with an idea.

The single treasonous idea that freedom is worth sacrifice.

And sacrifice for future generations is an honorable trade for today.

When it all seems too much, when all that surrounds us appears dark and without hope, may we smell the gunpowder and remember…we do this for the ones who will wear white gloves.

We do this for a future worthy of sacrifice.
