Trading Ladder Rungs

“If the ladder is not leaning against the right wall, every step we take just gets us to the wrong place faster.” – Stephen R. Covey

You’ve probably read this quote before, just as I had. And like most, I’d dismissed it without a second thought…of course I was on the right ladder.

Take a moment to look up: Is that what you really want? Are those people satisfied or simply “successful”? How’s their character? Will the difference you make (and you want to make one) matter up there?

Take a moment to look to the side: Is your family still there? Are you trading ladder rungs for relationships?

Now look down: Are you helping others? Does your ladder attract people of character and integrity? Is there anyone behind you?

The prestige, the productivity, the plaques, and even the pension will fade.

Take another look at your ladder. And never trade ladder rungs for what matters most.
